How do you make glass beads?
I’ve been feeling very crafty lately, and I love the way glass beads look. I’m sure it’d take a lot of practice to get it all right, but i was wondering how much it costs to get started in bead making. And what exactly do you need to do so?
Glass beads can be made with a high intensity air-propane braising torch – the Hot Head is commonly used and costs about $50. It is fairly noisy. The various mandrel rods and glass can be bought at www.arrowsprings.com or www.delphiglass.com For more serious work, most lampworkers as they are called use an oxy-propane/natural gas torch that is highly adjustable that costs $200-300 with the oxygen regulator and tank set up adding another $150-200. For thicker beads, the glass must be annealed over several hours and an annealer costs $300 up. for a non-commercial site www.hotglass.com
