The History Of Stained Glass – From Ancient Times To The Renaissance

Ancient Romans and Egyptians

Although the origin of stained glass is not fully understood, evidence shows that the production of colored glass dates back to the ancient Roman and Egyptian era, when these societies made smaller objects such as cups and vases.

Early Christian Church’s Influence

By the fourth and fifth centuries, the Christian Church had an early version of stained glass windows using alabaster set in wood frames. These pieces of art had the same effect as stained glass, however, they were not used to tell a story.

The first figurative piece of stained glass is believed to be from the ninth century.  Though the piece was damaged, it is clear it is of Christ’s head. It was found in Germany in a ditch near an abbey.

The Middle Ages

By the middle ages, traditional stained glass windows were a popular form of art in churches and castles. Stained glass was often used to depict biblical scenes, the saints, the Virgin Mary, Madonna and Child, the crucifixion, the ascension of Christ, among other stories.

The Roman and Gothic Style

During the Roman and Gothic periods, stained glass became more elaborate. Larger sheets of glass set in iron frames were used in churches, allowing additional light into churches and more ornate designs. Use of clear lines and strong figures are used in the Gothic pieces. Many churches and other buildings in Western Europe have some of the oldest and most famous intact stained glass windows dating back to the 12th century.

The Renaissance

During the Renaissance, stained glass pieces were made in more of a classical style. While both Gothic and classical stained glass windows depict Christian themes, there are differences. In classical stained glass pieces, subjects are usually dressed in period clothing, more attention is paid to the individual and realism, there is increased use of architecture, and non-religious scenes are also depicted.

What kind of/style is this glass pitcher and glass set?

Please see the slideshow below.

I found this set at an antique store and I’m trying to think of what you would call it? Is it a certain style, with the weaving around the pieces? It’s made in Italy.

Also, what would you call the color or the glass?

I believe the pitcher would be called a ‘cruet’. The color is ‘amber’. Since it’s from Italy the basketry and size of the glasses seems to indicate that it was used to serve wine. Or Not! (educated guess)
